Dentist Treatments
-
A dentist can use ultransonic devices and dental instruments to scale the teeth. During the procedure, bacteria and tartar are removed from the teeth and from under the gums. Also, a dentist can smooth the surfaces of the teeth roots to decrease the amount of future tartar buildup. Dental visits should be scheduled regularly, usually every 6 months. Some may need to go for cleanings and check-ups more often if recommended by the dentist.
Medications
-
Antibiotics may be prescribed to be taken either orally or applied topically on the gums with mouth rinses or with gels that can be applied between the teeth after cleaning. Pain medications may also be prescribed to alleviate pain associated with periodontis.
Surgical Interventions
-
One procedure that may be used is called flap surgery, which is done under local anesthesia. During this procedure, the periodontist will make very small incisions at various points along the gum line so that the gums can be moved away from the roots to allow for a more thorough cleaning of the teeth. Another procedure involved grafting soft tissue onto the gum line to replace gum tissues that has receded. The grafts are usually taken from the roof of the mouth. Also, bone grafting may be used to replace bone loss. Bone grafts may be taken from a donor or they may be made of synthetic material.
Prevention
-
The progression of periodontis can be slowed by taking care of the teeth and gums. A soft toothbrush should be used at least twice daily to brush the teeth. The toothbrush should be replaced at least every four months. An electric tooth brush may be even more effective at preventing periodontis. Also, the teeth should be flossed once per day. Also, mouthwash can help to decrease plaque buildup between the teeth.
