Gum Disease Treatment Products

Gum disease comes in two primary forms. Gingivitis is a form of gum disease that is easily reversible by cleaning the teeth and treating with an antibiotic. Periodontitis is a more advanced form or gum disease that gets below the gum line and can eventually kill teeth. There are many products on the market that advertise that they can help slow or even reverse gum disease.
  1. OraMD

    • OraMD bills itself through its website as a comprehensive treatment program that can help slow down, or even reverse, gum disease. OraMD is a liquid toothpaste, mouthwash and breath freshener made of almond, spearmint and peppermint oils. OraMD's official site says that the precise use of these three oils can effectively kill bacterias that cause gum disease and return the teeth and gums to health. The program requires you to brush twice a day and rinse twice a day with OraMD, in addition to placing two to five drops of OraMD on your tongue and using it to coat the teeth once per day.

    Oral Breeze

    • Oral Breeze, according to its website, has testimonials from several dentists and hygenists. Oral Breeze is a line of oral irrigators that can attach to your sink or your shower, which allow you to irrigate your mouth in the same way that a dentist would at his office. The Oral Breeze uses water from the tap and amplifies the water pressure in order to use the water as a pick to get rid of plaque and germs.

    Periotheraphy

    • This product is endorsed by Dr. Harold Katz, who founded California Breath Clinics. Periotherapy, like OraMD, is a mouth cleaning system that uses toothpaste and an oral rinse to treat gum disease. There is also a moldable treatment tray to help get the gel and toothpaste beneath the gum line. Periotherapy uses concentrated amounts of several minerals, including zinc, along with Aloe Vera, Tea Tree Oil and Xylitol.

    Deep Pocket Therapy

    • Created by Biolase Technology, Deep Pocket Therapy is quickly becoming an alternative to root planing, a widely accepted but invasive treatment for advanced gum disease. Using the Waterlase MD, a dentist can use this laser technology to treat the deep pockets where plaque and germs gather to create gum disease. Unlike root planing, this therapy does not require any surgery and can sometimes be done in one visit.

    Colgate Total

    • Yes, an over-the-counter toothpaste is a weapon against gum disease, and all you have to do is use it twice a day. Colgate Total is the only toothpaste approved by the Food and Drug Administration to stop gingivitis. It does so with an antibacterial ingredient called triclosan.
