Home Remedy for Gum Problems

Swollen and inflamed gums can be symptoms of gingivitis or periodontitis. Gum problems can be painful and impede your ability to eat and sleep. Before you seek treatment from a dentist, you can find relief with some simple home remedies. Always seek treatment from a dentist when your gums are inflamed. Periodontitis leads to tooth loss if left untreated.
  1. Rinsing

    • Use a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water as a rinse for your gums and teeth. Salt will help to pull infection out of the gums or tooth and soothe the inflamed gums.
Peroxide is another remedy for gum inflammation that you can try for your sore gums. Use half a glass of peroxide with half a glass of water. Hydrogen peroxide kills the bacteria that is causing a gum inflammation.
Add a few drops of peppermint oil to a glass of water to reduce inflammation. Peppermint oil is an astringent, which will shrink gum tissues.
Use these rinses to reduce the inflammation in your gums and relieve the pain. Once gums have returned to normal size, the pain typically disappears as well.

    Pain Relief

    • Apply an ice pack to your face in the area where the gums are inflamed and painful. This treatment will relieve the pain while you are waiting for a dental appointment.
Use bergamot oil directly on the affected area or added to water for a mouth rinse. Bergamot is used in herbal medicine as an antiseptic and can treat a variety of gum sores.
You can also apply clove oil directly on your sore gums. Clove is a common ingredient in dental rinses. Tea bags applied directly to sore gums will release tannic acid that can relieve pain and provide an antiseptic at the same time.
Do not apply aspirin directly to your sore gums. This can cause the gums to become damaged further.

    Lifestyle

    • Keep your mouth free of dental plaque to avoid gum problems. Plaque is the substance that forms on your teeth every day. It is made up of bacteria and mucus. When plaque is not removed regularly, it leads to an infection of the teeth and gums. You should brush and floss after every meal to avoid gum problems.
Visit the dentist for regular checkups. Gum disease can be present in your mouth before you ever feel a symptom. A dentist is able to detect the presence of gum disease during a checkup. You can treat a gum disease in the early stages much easier than in later stages.
