Gum Infection Condition & Symptoms

Gum disease is also called periodontal disease. It is an infection of tissues and bones in the mouth which support the teeth. Mild gum disease is gingivitis. Progressive gum disease is periodontitis.
  1. Gingivitis

    • Gingivitis causes red, swollen gums which bleed when brushed. It is not usually painful which is why many people do not seek treatment.

    Periodontitis

    • When gums shrink away from teeth, it allows germs and bacteria to grow in the mouth which can damage bones that support teeth. Teeth may become loose or fall out.

    Causes

    • The plaque in mouths contains bacteria which makes toxins and poisons. This causes gum tissue to break down which can lead to damaged bone support.

    RIsks

    • Risk factors for gum disease are smoking or chewing tobacco, family history of the disease and improperly cleaning teeth. Also at risk are those with a poor diet or diseases like diabetes or leukemia.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of gum disease include red, swollen, tender gums, gums which bleed when brushed, gums that have pulled away from teeth and persistent bad breath.

    Treatment

    • Brushing and flossing daily will get rid of mild gum disease. More severe cases require dental cleaning, antibiotics for any infection and sometimes surgery.
