Gum Disease
-
The American Dental Association defines gum (periodontal) disease as an infection of the tissues that support your teeth. According to ADA.org a gap, known as the sulcus is located between the teeth and gums, and is the site for periodontal diseases to occur. When the tissue is damaged, the sulcus widens into a pocket.
Types
-
The American Dental Association lists two major stages of periodontal disease: gingivitis and periodontitis. Stages are determined based on the seriousness and progression of the disease. Gingivitis is a less severe and reversible phase in gum disease that only affects the gums according to ADA.org. The more severe and irreversible phase of gum disease is periodontitis.
