Good dental health begins with clean teeth and healthy gums. To maintain good oral health, the American Dental Association (ADA) suggests brushing your teeth twice a day with an ADA-approved fluoride toothpaste. Replace your toothbrush every three or four months. In addition, clean spaces between teeth with dental floss or use an interdental cleaner to get rid of sticky film on teeth (will harden to plaque if not removed) and food particles. Antimicrobial mouth rinse will further reduce bacterial activity.

Sometimes, despite conscientious efforts to maintain oral health, gum disease may still develop due to heredity, uncontrolled diabetes, pregnancy or improper oral cleaning. To maintain healthy gums, a regular check-up is necessary to catch any early signs of gum disease. Dentists also recommend having a professional teeth cleaning every six months to remove plaque that may develop even with careful dental care. Plaque can lead to gum disease.
Proper Nutrition

Eating a balanced diet with essential nutrients can help to keep gums healthy. For instance, a diet lacking in calcium, vitamin C and B vitamins can increase the risks of periodontal disease, according to Life Extension. Foods rich in antioxidants can help to protect gums against inflammation. Examples include citrus fruits, blueberries, strawberries and other colorful fruits and vegetables. The Institute for Optimum Nutrition also points out that deficiencies of protein, vitamin D and calcium may cause the resorption of bone around the teeth and compromise the periodontal ligaments that attach the teeth to the jawbones.
Preventive Measures

Taking proactive measures such as the ones discussed above is crucial to good gum health. However, there are also certain preventive measures to take as well. Smoking can increase the risks for periodontal disease. Why? Smoking can diminish the oxygen and nutrient delivery to the gum, thereby preventing the synthesis of cytokines, proteins needed to regulate immunity and inflammation. Stress is another factor that can work indirectly to jeopardize gum health. Stress can trigger bad habits like smoking and poor diet, factors that encourage poor gum health.
