What Is a Periodontist?

Periodontists are dental specialists who diagnose, treat, and prevent periodontal disease, which affects the gums and the bone that supports the teeth. They receive an additional three years of training following dental school to become experts in this field. Periodontists typically provide surgical and non-surgical treatments for periodontal disease, such as scaling and root planing, flap surgery, bone grafts, and dental implants.
