What Is an Endodontist?

Endodontists are dentists with special training in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and conditions of the dental pulp, the living chamber at the center of a tooth.

Endodontists treat a variety of dental problems, including:

- Root canal treatment: Endodontists usually perform root canals to treat teeth that have become severely infected or damaged. During a root canal, the endodontist removes the pulp from the tooth and then disinfects and fills the root canals.

- Retreatment of failed root canals: Sometimes, a root canal that was previously performed may fail. This may be due to a number of factors, such as new infection or damage to the tooth. Endodontists can often retreat failed root canals and restore the tooth to health.

- Surgical endodontics: This is a type of endodontic surgery that is performed when the infection or damage to a tooth is more severe. Surgical endodontics can involve removing the tooth's root tip, performing a root canal, and placing a filling in the root canal.

- Dental trauma: Endodontists can treat teeth that have been damaged by trauma, such as accidents or sports injuries. Treatment may involve root canal therapy, surgical endodontics, or other procedures to restore the tooth to health.

Endodontists are highly skilled and experienced in treating dental problems of the dental pulp. If you are experiencing any type of dental pain or discomfort, it is important to see your dentist. They will be able to determine if you need to be referred to an endodontist for treatment.
