Orthodontic Braces and Foods to Avoid
Orthodontic braces are an expensive investment in the long-term health and appearance of your teeth. Certain foods and drinks may cause discomfort to wearers and may even lead to damage of braces or teeth. Avoiding these foods until braces are removed will help you have a more comfortable experience.-
Hard Fruits and Vegetables
-
Carrots, apples and other hard fruits and vegetables should be cut into small pieces before eating. Corn can be eaten if removed from the cob. Biting into these foods whole can damage braces.
Certain Breads
-
Tough or crusty bread items should be avoided because they can bend wires or loosen brackets. This includes bagels, hard rolls and cookies, pizza crust (the rest of the pizza can be eaten) and pretzels.
Chewy or Sticky Foods
-
This includes bubble gum, caramels, taffy, and other chewy candies. These foods can get stuck between brackets or wires and may require an emergency visit to the orthodontist for removal. Foods that can stick to braces also increase the risk for tooth decay.
Crunchy Foods
-
Nuts, nut brittle, corn chips and ice cubes can all damage braces or teeth when crunched. Parenthood.com also suggests avoiding foods that might tempt you to crunch, such as lollipops or candy canes.
Certain Meats
-
Chicken wings and ribs can be eaten if the meat is removed first from the bones. Jerky should be avoided because its leathery texture can damage braces.
Sugary Snacks and Drinks
-
On his website, orthodontist William Layman, DMD, recommends limiting consumption of sugary foods and drinks while wearing braces. Braces increase the risk of tooth decay caused by these items. When sugary foods are consumed, Layman recommends brushing or rinsing thoroughly with water as soon as possible.
Soda
-
According to orthodontist William Layman, DMD, dark cola should be completely avoided while wearing braces as it can cause discoloration of the teeth when the acid in the cola erodes the enamel around braces. Clear sodas are acceptable, but Layman recommends limiting consumption to one per day.
Nonfood Items
-
Nail biting, chewing on pencils or pens, biting or chewing lips, and pushing the tongue against the teeth are all habits that should be broken while wearing braces to avoid injury to the mouth and damage to braces.
