How to Put on Elastics for Braces
Braces are an orthodontic tool used to straighten crooked or misaligned teeth, and to correct an overbite, underbite or other unhealthy dental problem. The orthodontist places a bracket on each tooth needing to be moved and joins them with a wire, which he tightens on a regular basis to bring the teeth together in an attractive and functional bite. Rubber bands--or elastics--which you place the braces yourself, are used to help close spaces and gaps more quickly.Things You'll Need

1
Look in the mirror, open your mouth, and locate the upper and lower bracket, on the same side of your mouth, which have hooks on them. These are the two teeth the orthodontist wants you to connect with the elastics.
-
2
Place the elastic on the hook on the lower bracket with your thumb and index finger as you hold your cheek back with your other hand. Do not let go of the elastic.
-
3
Stretch the elastic up to the hook on the top bracket, pull it over the hook and let it go. The elastic should be correctly in place.
-
4
Repeat steps 1 through 3 on the other side of your mouth if necessary.
