How to Solder Wires on Retainers

Retainers are devices prescribed by orthodontists to help correct tooth growth in their patients. There are many different styles and types of retainers. Some are built to the shape of the mouth and are simply slipped in. Other types, like head gear, are worn on the outside of the head and attache, via metal brackets, to braces. If a retainer wire ever needs to be reinforced or repaired and it will be a few days until you can actually see your orthodontist, solder can be used to temporarily mend it. Thin retainer wire is very similar in pliability to wires used on the ends of resistors and other electronic components.

• Soldering iron
• Rosin core solder
• Vise
• Plastic container
• Listerine

  Place the retainer on a work bench in a well-lit area.

  Plug in the soldering iron or soldering gun. Allow the tool 10 minutes to heat up.

  Use a paper towel to dry the retainer if it needs to be and then join the severed ends together. A simple work bench vise can be used to do this.

  Hold the tip of the soldering iron about a centimeter below the retainer wires, where the joint will be made.

  Gently touch the solder to the iron and allow it to melt thinly over the retainer wire. Allow a minute for the bond to dry.

  Place the retainer in a plastic container with Listerine or another anti-bacterial mouth wash before using it.
