The Six Phases of Orthodontics
Orthodontics is concerned with the movement of teeth and the modification of certain neuromuscular and skeletal growth patterns. Some people will require braces and other orthodontic appliances to move teeth, in addition to retentive devices to maintain the position of teeth. Orthodontic care can change the structure of the face and result in a pleasant smile. When patients are considering orthodontic care, six stages can often lead to desired results.-
Consultation
-
The consultation is the first visit to the orthodontist. The orthodontist examines the patient to assess the need for orthodontic treatment and comes to a conclusion as to whether treatment is indicated. Some patients will not be ready for orthodontic care and will be put on a waiting list. Factors such as alignment of the teeth, whether the mouth is large enough for all teeth and position of the teeth are taken into consideration.
Orthodontic Records
-
An orthodontic records appointment is scheduled if treatment is needed. The orthodontist formulates a plan for the patient. Radiography is performed, impressions of the upper and lower jaw may be obtained, diagnostic study models are created, facial photographs are obtained and a detailed dental history is recorded.
Case Presentation and Separators
-
The orthodontist explains the treatment plan to the patient. Diagnosis is discussed and the type of treatment is chosen. Braces are also chosen if that is the required treatment. The doctor also discusses the estimated time and cost. If braces are required, separators, or thick elastic bands, are placed between back teeth to make room for the orthodontic appliance. This typically occurs seven to 14 days prior to placement of braces.
Band and Bond
-
The band and bond appointment involves having the braces placed on the teeth. Fixed braces are situated by use of direct and indirect bonding, a procedure done at chairside. This is painless, and the appointment lasts about 90 minutes.
Archwire Adjustment
-
Archwires on braces are adjusted every four to six weeks for the duration of the treatment. The wire may be changed or adjusted. Orthodontic elastics are also changed. This appointment typically lasts 30 minutes.
Retainer Checks
-
After braces are removed, patients need to wear retainers to hold teeth in position. Retainers are checked regularly to ensure they are being worn properly. Relapse may occur, especially in severe cases. The most common area of relapse is the lower front teeth. Full cooperation is integral to achieve desired results. Retainers are worn for 24 hours a day for 6 months or more, then for a few nights a week and eventually less.
