When does a water break?

Water breaks occur when the amniotic sac ruptures, releasing the amniotic fluid. This usually happens at the end of pregnancy as the cervix starts to open in preparation for childbirth. However, in some cases, water may break early, which is known as preterm premature rupture of the membranes (PPROM).
