Why the wall of small intestine be smooth?

The wall of the small intestine is not smooth. It has numerous finger-like projections called villi and even smaller projections called microvilli, which give it a velvety appearance. These villi and microvilli increase the surface area of the small intestine, which is important for the absorption of nutrients from digested food.
