Proper dental hygiene leads to healthy teeth and a confident smile. Help your child step onto a small stool. Being able to see herself in the mirror will help a child make sure she brushes all her teeth. Using a step stool to reach the sink like a big kid will also motivate small children to brush their teeth daily.

Squeeze or pump a generous amount of toothpaste onto a toothbrush. Choose a brand of toothpaste made specifically for children in a flavor the child will enjoy. Use a small, child-size toothbrush that will fit easily into your child's mouth.

Tell your child to brush the front of his teeth using a side-to-side motion. Sing a song about brushing teeth and have your child continue brushing until the song is over. Have your child brush the back of hisr teeth using an up-and-down motion. Repeat the song to make sure your child brushes his teeth for an adequate period of time.

Brush your child's teeth again after he is finished to make sure the teeth are clean. Parents should brush a child's teeth until the child is 6 years old or can clean his teeth without help. Explain what you are doing to the child, and give extra attention to the child's tongue and gum line.
