How to Get the Batteries Out of a Sonicare

Sonicare makes electric toothbrushes, which are powered by a rechargeable battery stored in the base. The problem comes when the battery fails. There is no obvious way to remove the battery to replace it with something else, so some people choose to discard or recycle the toothbrush and buy a new one. You can, in fact, remove and replace the battery, although it's not a very straightforward process. To start, you first have to get the batteries out of the Sonicare, which takes about 45 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the Sonicare toothbrush in your dominant hand and use your other hand to pull the brush head out of the base.

    • 2

Locate the slot at the bottom of the handle. Insert the large flat-head screwdriver into the slot and turn the screwdriver clockwise 90 degrees. Push down on the screwdriver and slide out the electrical circuit board and battery from the inside of the Sonicare.

Rotate the circuit board until you locate the battery. Locate the positive and negative posts on the battery, which are connected to the motherboard by two soldered connections, which are soldered on the opposite side of the motherboard to the battery. Turn the motherboard on its side so you can find the soldering points on the motherboard opposite the posts on the battery, turning the assembly back and forth with your hands if necessary.

Turn on the soldering iron. Hold down the tip of the iron on the soldering point on the circuit board closest to the brush end of the toothbrush while simultaneously prying the battery away from the circuit board with the small-blade flat-head screwdriver. Repeat this process on the negative terminal on the battery until the battery is free from the circuit board entirely.
