How to Clean Teeth with Water

Cleaning the teeth is a daily routine for healthy teeth and gums. Without proper cleansing, many diseases, such as tooth decay and gum disease, can invade the mouth. If left untreated, these diseases may lead to pain and/or tooth loss. Missing teeth cause their own set of problems with chewing food and jaw misalignment problems. While dentures and dental implants are available, they are expensive alternatives to your natural teeth. But there are a few ways to clean your teeth and your mouth using just water.

Rinse mouth with water after every meal. Sip some water, hold it in your mouth, swish it around and spit it out. Do this a few times to remove food parties from the surface of your teeth. Rinsing your mouth also gets rid of some of the bacteria in your mouth that can cause disease.

Brush teeth with water. Dip your toothbrush in water and brush the teeth. Brush at least three to four minutes, suggests the University of Maryland Medical Center in its article, "Oral Health." Brush all sides and areas of the teeth to clean them. While toothpastes provides fluoride, whitening agents and flavorings, the "New York Daily News" reports that a Dutch study, published in the in "Journal of Periodontology" in 2009, shows that brushing without toothpaste actually removed more plaque. Brushing thoroughly with water is an effective way to clean the teeth.

Use mouth-irrigation systems to clean between the teeth and around the gums. Fill the tank with water, turn on the machine and use the pick to direct water between the teeth and around the teeth for gums. Cleaning with mild pressured water is an excellent way to deep clean the teeth using only water. The water reaches places the tooth brush can't reach. The water spray helps "to remove food, bacteria and plaque from the teeth," reports the article "High-Pressure Tooth Spray: Clean Teeth With Water" on the World Dental website
