What Is a Home Remedy to Clean Toothbrushes?
It's important to keep your toothbrushes clean to avoid infecting yourself with germs and other bacteria that can build up with use. Some people may choose to replace toothbrushes every few months, but that can get costly and is wasteful. There are natural ways to clean your toothbrush so you may safely use it a while longer.-
Vinegar
-
Soaking your toothbrushes for a few hours in a glass of straight household vinegar every two weeks will ensure that your toothbrushes are clean and free of molds, germs and bacteria. Vinegar is too acidic for most molds and bacteria to thrive.
Hydrogen Peroxide Solution
-
Mix a teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide in 1 cup of warm water to make a cleaning solution. Soak your toothbrush in this solution for a minute. To disinfect your toothbrush as well as help whiten your teeth, swish your toothbrush in this solution prior to use, rinsing with water before you use it.
Bleach
-
Mix 1 part water and 1 part bleach in a glass. Place your toothbrush in the solution for 30 seconds, and then rinse well to avoid ingesting any bleach when you use your toothbrush. Bleach will kill any germs or bacteria on your toothbrush.
Boiling Water
-
Boil a cup and a half of water in a pan on the stove. Once the water has come to a boil, allow it to cool for one minute, and then place your toothbrushes into water. Let them sit until the water is cool. The boiling water will kill germs, making the toothbrushes as clean as new.
Things to Know
-
No matter how often you clean your toothbrushes, it is recommended that you change them every three to four months, because the bristles can begin to wear out after extended use.
Always cover your toothbrush when not in use to avoid contact with airborne germs in your bathroom. Make sure the toothbrush is completely dry before covering it.
