Sodium Bicarbonate Dental Uses

Sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda, is used in all sorts of dental products today. Toothpastes and dental gums often include baking soda among the ingredients list. This product is not just filler. It is added because sodium bicarbonate, when used orally, has many benefits. Proper use, though, is necessary to make baking soda work for you.
  1. Teeth Cleanser

    • Baking soda works as a cleaning agent for teeth. It should be mixed with other ingredients for the best results. According to one online blog, a successful recipe features 3 parts baking soda mixed with 1 part salt, 3 teaspoons of glycerin, and enough water to form a paste. Drops of flavoring, including peppermint, can be added for better flavor. The same solution can be used to clean the actual toothbrush.

    Teeth Brightener

    • Stained teeth often require more than brushing with the average toothpaste. Baking soda helps to remove the yellow stains that appear on teeth. According to dentist Carlos Beckum, it removes stains and plaque that are embedded on the surface of a tooth or in tooth crevices. The chemical reaction that takes place when the baking soda dissolves helps to eliminate the stains. Beckum recommends dipping a toothbrush in baking soda to cover the bristles. He suggests brushing gently with a soft bristle toothbrush for two to three minutes. Beckum also recommends brushing again with regular fluoride toothpaste to protect teeth from cavities. To achieve success with baking soda, purchase toothpaste that has baking soda as an additive or brush once or twice a week with only baking soda on your toothbrush. Baking soda also works for dentures. You can soak dentures in a solution of 2 teaspoons of baking soda dissolved in warm water.

    Breath Freshener

    • Baking soda absorbs odors. It is stored in refrigerators for this purpose, and it's commonly found in foot powders used to keep shoes dry and fresh. Naturally, baking soda has the same effect on breath. Brushing the teeth, gums, and mouth with baking soda reduces odor. It is particularly useful for individuals who suffer from frequent cases of bad breath. An option is to use baking soda as a mouth wash. To do this, mix 1 tsp. baking soda with one-half glass of warm water. Then use the solution in the same way that you would use a mouth wash. Rinse after using.
