Mouthwash Directions

Mouthwash freshens your breath, prevents cavities, improves the health of your gums and kill germs that cause gingivitis. A mouthwash should never substitute for brushing and flossing your teeth, but it can be part of your daily dental care routine. Regardless of the type or brand of mouthwash, proper use is required to get full benefits.

      Measure out amount of mouthwash indicted on label instructions, and pour into a cup. Depending on the brand you use, this amount can be anywhere from 2 to 4 teaspoons. Look on the inside of the mouthwash cap, some brands mark their caps with a measurement line so you can use it as a cup.

      Follow label directions and dilute the mouthwash with water, if so indicated. Some stronger concentrations may require that you dilute the solution to avoid burning and irritation.

      Place the mouthwash liquid in your mouth and close your lips. Swish the liquid in your mouth for 30 to 60 seconds depending on the bottle instructions. Open your teeth slightly to let the liquid seep through and make contact with your teeth, tongue, cheeks and back of your mouth.

      Spit out the mouthwash. Rinse with mouthwash at least twice a day; once in the morning and once before bedtime. Rinse after eating meals to instantly eliminate bacteria.
