Abnormal Whitening of the Teeth Due to Calcium

Many different things can cause tooth discoloration, including calcium deposits. Changes in teeth color may affect the entire tooth, or just appear as spots or lines in the tooth enamel.
  1. About Calcium Deposits

    • Calcium deposits happen when the development of the teeth is interrupted. The cells that make the hard, white enamel absorb too much mineral, resulting in a white or brown spot in the tooth.

    Causes

    • A number of elements can influence tooth color and cause calcium deposits. Inherited genes may determine the color of teeth. Teeth can also vary in color depending on disease, infections, environmental factors, medication and even the amount of fluoride a person consumes while using toothpaste.

    Removing Calcium Deposits

    • Doctors may be able to fix tooth discolorations by bleaching and gently removing the calcium deposit with air abrasion--which is a machine that blows particles at the teeth at high speeds. Doctors may also be able even out the color using filling material, or supply patients with porcelain veneers and crowns.
