How to Use 20% Peroxide in Teeth Cleaning

One of the methods for whitening teeth is a 20 percent hydrogen peroxide solution. This level of bleach can cause teeth sensitivity and sores if used too long or too often. Hydrogen peroxide can also be used for daily brushing with a 3 percent solution. This amount can be added to your toothpaste or used to disinfect your toothbrush before and after brushing your teeth. The peroxide will not only kill bacteria, but will also whiten your teeth and freshen your breath.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush and floss your teeth prior to using the 20 percent peroxide whitening solution. The solution works best with clean and dry teeth. The trays that were created by your dentist will form to your teeth, thus getting the gel as close to your teeth as possible.

    • 2

Fill the teeth trays partially with the gel. It takes a very small amount to cover your teeth. Since the front eight teeth are visible when you smile, adding gel to the back would be a waste of product. Insert the trays into your mouth and wipe away any excess gel with your finger or a tissue.

    • 3

Leave the trays in place for 30 minutes to an hour. This will depend on your sensitivity and the amount of whitening that is required. Your dentist will suggest the amount of time to leave the solution on.

    • 4

Remove the trays and rinse your teeth with water. Brush and floss your teeth again to ensure that all the gel has been removed. Use desensitizing gel, if necessary, for sensitive teeth. Clean out and store your trays for re-use.
