Instruction for Using Opalescense Whitener

Tooth whitening kits offer an affordable and effective way to battle the common causes of discoloration. These include certain medications, smoking and beverages such as coffee, tea, soda and red wine. Opalescence is a customized tooth-whitening treatment designed to remove surface stains and brighten your smile. It does this by using carbamide peroxide -- which features a deep penetrative effect, as opposed to standard hydrogen peroxide -- to safely whiten stained teeth. Opalescence is available through dentists in three versions: in-office treatment and two types of at-home kits.

Instructions

  1. Whitening Gels

    • 1

Make an appointment with your dentist to have a set of dental trays made to fit your teeth. Opalescence Take Home Whitening Gels require a customized mouth tray that only your dentist can provide. Your dentist will take impressions of your teeth so the trays will fit perfectly and the whitening gel can penetrate crevices. The gel comes in individual tubes that work with the trays.

    • 2

Brush your teeth thoroughly using a whitening toothpaste, such as Rembrandt or Colgate White, and a medium toothbrush. Brush for 3 minutes, then floss your teeth to remove any food particles and plaque. Use a clean, soft cloth to dry your teeth -- removing excess saliva and moisture.

    • 3

Squeeze one of the individual Opalescence gel tubes into the bottom and top trays. Use approximately 1/4 of the tube for both trays. Spread the gel into the bottom and front sections of the trays, to get full coverage on the front of your teeth. Do not overfill the trays.

    • 4

Place the top tray onto your upper teeth, and the bottom tray over your lower teeth. Gently push each tray against your teeth, then push it further to establish a seal at your gum line. Use a clean cotton swab or soft cloth to remove any excess gel.

    • 5

Leave the trays on your teeth as prescribed by your dentist. This is generally 8 to 10 hours. However, whitening times vary among patients, depending on the degree of discoloration.

    • 6

Remove the trays, and rinse your mouth with lukewarm water. Avoid cold water, as your teeth may be somewhat sensitive. Brush your teeth with a whitening toothpaste, and rinse with warm water. Repeat brushing and rinsing, one more time.

    • 7

Repeat Steps 2 to 6 until your teeth reach the desired shade of white. Rinse the trays thoroughly after each use.

    Pre-Filled, Disposable Trays

    • 8

Brush your teeth thoroughly using a whitening toothpaste, such as Rembrandt or Colgate White, and a medium toothbrush. Brush for 3 minutes, then floss your teeth to remove any food particles and plaque. Use a clean, soft cloth to dry your teeth -- removing excess saliva and moisture.

    • 9

Open the package of Opalescence Trèswhite Supreme, and carefully remove the pre-filled trays -- labeled for your top and bottom teeth. Leave the gel-filled trays inside the outer positioning trays.

    • 10

Place the top tray onto your teeth, center it and gently suck down to ensure the inner tray is properly adhered to your teeth. Remove the outer part of the tray, and discard it. Press the inner tray against your teeth, creating a seal around the gum line.

    • 11

Repeat Step 3 to position the bottom tray. Leave both trays in place for 30 to 60 minutes.

    • 12

Remove the trays, and rinse your mouth with warm water. Use a soft toothbrush to remove excess gel, then rinse again.

    • 13

Repeat Steps 1 to 5 daily for up to 10 days, or until you have reached the desired results.
