Find quick and temporary pain relief by crushing half a tablet of an over-the-counter painkiller, for example, aspirin, and place it onto a small piece of wet cotton. Cover the tooth with the cotton and leave on for 5 to 10 minutes to allow the medication to dissolve into the tooth and surrounding gum tissue.

If your toothache is from a lost filling or cavity, fill with orthodontic wax for temporary relief of pain caused by cold water, food and other stimulants until you can visit the dentist for a permanent filling. Orthodontic wax is available at most local drugstores. Brush your teeth and rinse your mouth out well before applying the wax to the cavity.

If your toothache is caused by gum hypersensitivity, remove or reduce the triggers from touching the tooth. Extreme temperatures in certain foods or beverages, for example, ice cream and icy drinks, are common triggers of toothaches.

Get some temporary relief by taking an over-the-counter painkiller like acetaminophen or ibuprofen, which are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
