Why do tonsil stones smell?

Tonsil stones are composed of bacteria, food debris, and dead cells that accumulate in the crevices of the tonsils. The bacteria break down the protein within the stones, releasing volatile sulfur compounds which produce a foul odor. This odor is similar to that of rotten eggs or garbage and can be quite unpleasant. Additionally, tonsil stones can harbor a range of other bacterial species, some of which produce metabolic waste products that further contribute to the bad smell. Poor oral hygiene, smoking, and certain medical conditions can increase the risk of developing tonsil stones and exacerbate the associated odor.
