What is tonsillomycosis?
Tonsillomycosis is a fungal infection of the tonsils. It is caused by a variety of fungi, including *Candida albicans*, *Aspergillus niger*, and *Mucor species. Tonsillomycosis is most common in people with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS or cancer.
Symptoms
The symptoms of tonsillomycosis can include:
* Sore throat
* Difficulty swallowing
* Hoarseness
* White or yellow patches on the tonsils
* Swollen tonsils
* Fever
* Chills
* Muscle aches
* Fatigue
Diagnosis
Tonsillomycosis is diagnosed by taking a throat culture and examining it under a microscope. A throat culture can also be used to identify the type of fungus that is causing the infection.
Treatment
Tonsillomycosis is treated with antifungal medications. These medications can be taken by mouth or given intravenously (IV). The length of treatment will depend on the type of fungus that is causing the infection and the severity of the infection.
Prevention
There is no sure way to prevent tonsillomycosis. However, people with weakened immune systems can reduce their risk of infection by avoiding contact with people who are known to be infected with fungal infections and by practicing good hygiene, such as washing their hands frequently and avoiding touching their face.
