Tips to Relieve a Toothache

Toothaches can be extremely painful. A person can get a toothache if he has an infection, if he is getting or losing a tooth, or if there is some type of problem with the root, nerve, or gum. It is not always possible to get in to see a dentist right away so you will need to know how you can relieve the pain at home.
  1. Salt Water

    • Use salt water if you begin to experience pain in your tooth. Add 2 tablespoons of salt to a warm 8-ounce glass of water. Mix it up and then start gargling with it. Continue until the entire glass has been used. The salt will work to kill any germs in your mouth. It also has the ability to alleviate the pain for a short period of time. You may need to repeat this once per hour until you can get yourself to the dentist.

    Pain Relievers

    • Take two Tylenol, two aspirin, or one Advil. These products are all pain relievers and fever reducers. They may take 20 minutes to begin working, but they will provide you with relief for a few hours at a time. It is also important to take one of these medications if you have a fever. Never exceed the dosing instructions on the pain reliever packages no matter how bad your pain. If you can't wait to see your dentist than take a trip to the emergency room.

    Instant Relief Gel

    • There are several instant relief gels on the market. Orajel is one of the most common pain relief gels. It is sold in almost all grocery, department or drug stores. Squeeze a tiny bit of the gel on your finger and place your finger directly onto the part of the tooth or gum that hurts. This will numb the area, but can also spread with your saliva to your tongue and other parts of your mouth. Your entire mouth may feel numb if you use too much, so be careful. This gel is not meant to be used on a long-term basis so make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.
