Natural Tooth Ache Relief

A toothache--pain or swelling around a tooth--can be more than just bothersome; it can dominate your thoughts and ruin your day. Toothaches can be caused by cavities, inflamed dental tissue, an abscess, a crack in the tooth, or even exposed nerve tissue. While there are a variety of causes for an aching tooth, natural remedies can support your mouth regardless of the reason for the ache. Try one or more of these natural treatments next time you need relief.
  1. Essential Oils

    • To use essential oils therapeutically look for 100 percent natural high quality oils that are organic or wild harvested, and which are not diluted or overly processed. Synthetic oils have no healing properties and should not be used in preparations for natural remedies.

Rely on clove bud essential oil for its therapeutic properties and reputation for easing toothaches. To administer, simply place one drop of clove bud oil on a cotton swab and dab it gently around the gum where pain is present. This process can be repeated as needed.

If clove oil is unappealing to you consider substituting peppermint essential oil instead. Administer it in the same manner using a clean cotton swab.

Make a synergistic jawbone massage oil using a combination of 1 drop of clove bud oil, 2 drops of chamomile essential oil and 2 drops of lemon essential oil, dispersed in 1 tsp. of sweet almond oil. Massage the jaw and cheek area where the pain is present. Repeat as often as is necessary for relief.

    Herbal Treatments & Supplements

    • Use a goldenseal tincture (a liquid herbal extraction) to aid in pain relief. Place 2 to 3 drops of goldenseal extract on a cotton ball and place it gently against the inflamed area. Do not remove the treatment for several hours, or leave in place overnight. This process can be helpful to fight harmful bacteria and inflammation.

Take either L-Tyrosine or White Willow Bark internally, as directed on the label, for pain relief.

    Other Remedies

    • Apply a hot compress (such as a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel) externally to the affected area. If the area is swollen, place an ice pack over the area to relieve swelling and provide a gentle numbing sensation.
