How to Use Dry Clove for a Toothache

There are few types of pain that are more vexing than a toothache. Tooth pain, whether it comes in the form of intense pangs or constant, dull throbbing, can make you feel miserable. You should see your dentist as soon as possible to determine the cause of the pain, but while you're waiting for your appointment, consider using a clove remedy to get temporary pain relief. Clove has antiseptic properties, so it's effective in reducing pain.

Buy whole, dry cloves at your local health food store. You can also purchase them at an herbal remedy shop or a vitamin specialty store.

    • 2

Place a few whole cloves into a mortar and crush them by pressing down firmly and twisting the pestle on the cloves. If you do not have a mortar and pestle, wrap the cloves in a clean kitchen cloth and use a meat tenderizer or other heavy utensil to crush them.

Place a piece of crushed clove on the spot in your mouth where you feel the most pain. Replace the piece of clove with a fresh one, as needed for pain relief. Alternatively, add a little bit of warm water to the crushed cloves to make a paste and apply it to the aching area. The warmth of the paste also can help reduce pain.
