Purchase over-the-counter pain medications such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen or aspirin. Take the medication as directed, usually over four to eight hours to alleviate the pain. These pain medications can alleviate or stop the aches and pains, depending upon the severity of the dental condition and level of pain.

Avoid foods and drinks that are extreme in temperature such as hot tea and ice cream. Hot and cold foods can aggravate cavities, exposed roots and exposed nerve endings.

Gargling wheat grass juice is a great mouthwash for tooth decay and curing toothaches. Wheat grass juice or concentrate can be purchased at most health stores. Chewing wheat grass itself can also be beneficial and alleviate toothache pain. Wheat grass is a natural antibiotic and draws out toxins. It is beneficial for teeth and gums.

Gargle salt water for a few minutes to help with immediate pain. Salt water will alleviate the pain immediately but it will only last an hour.

Apply clove oil to a cotton ball and put on the affected area for approximately two minutes. Cloves have a natural antiseptic property and can especially alleviate the pain associated with cavities. A compound called eugenol is present in cloves and is a very powerful antiseptic. Clove oil can be purchased over-the-counter at most pharmacies and health stores.

Place a slice of raw onion over the affected area. Raw onions are known for their bactericidal properties and can fend off infection or further problems until you are able to make it to the dentist. Raw onions are especially great for preventing and controlling toothaches.
