How to Deal With a Wisdom Tooth

Wisdom teeth are the very last molars that are positioned in the back of your jaw. Typically, they erupt through the gums when you are between the ages of 17 and 25, but they can come in at any age from adolescence through adulthood. When wisdom teeth begin to erupt, they can cause a good deal of pain and discomfort. Fortunately, there are ways to mitigate the suffering involved. Some people get wisdom teeth removed and it is a very common surgery.

Put an onion on the specific area that is causing you pain. Onions are considered a great pain reliever in natural medicine circles. Cut the onion into small pieces that will fit directly over the trouble area and will press on the tooth when your mouth is shut. You can also position the onion between your gums and your cheek. The cold nature of the onion will also help kill any bacteria that may be causing the pain, according to Tandurust, a natural remedies website.

Put a piece of garlic on your gums. A peel of a garlic clove can be a simple remedy, but sprinkle salt on the clove before placing it on your gums. The salt combined with the garlic will give the painful area an analgesic effect as both garlic and salt are natural pain relievers. Keep the garlic on your gums as long as it lasts. If you need to replace the old garlic clove with a new one, do so.

Take aspirin or ibuprofen for pain relief. Always follow the instructions for taking any medications. You should only need these painkillers for a few days, after which the pain should subside.

Take a standard household cotton ball and dip it in hydrogen peroxide. Use the soaked cotton ball with hydrogen peroxide to swab the gums around the wisdom tooth. The contact with the hydrogen peroxide may burn slightly so use conservatively at first. Add more peroxide as you feel more comfortable with its effects. Only do this a couple times as a day as you don't want to introduce excessive amounts of hydrogen peroxide to your gums.

Place an ice cube in your mouth and move it with your tongue so that it's sitting right on the area of pain. The cube will numb the problem area and reduce your discomfort level. This remedy only works if the pain is mild.
