How to Stop the Atkins Diet

The Atkins diet is a carbohydrate-restricted diet that causes the body to go into ketosis, which is when the body feeds off of its reserved fat instead of feeding off of the refined sugar from carbohydrates. This, however, can cause side effects over the long term, including bad breath and constipation, so it is recommended that you work on getting off of the Atkins diet if you have been on it for a long period of time. You need to follow a process, however, if you want to stop the Atkins diet without regaining the weight you have lost.

Instructions

    • 1

Slowly retrain your body to accept carbohydrates. For the first week, eat one piece of sprouted grain toast in the morning. Do not eat any other carbohydrates throughout the day.

    • 2

Slowly retrain your body to accept lower amounts of protein. During the second week, substitute tofu for approximately half of your protein consumption for the day.

    • 3

Cut down on your dairy intake. On week three, cut out 3/4 of your cheese, milk and other dairy consumption. Eat as much yogurt as you like. Continue eating one piece of sprouted grain bread in the morning and replace half of your protein sources with tofu.

    • 4

Add lean meats like pork and chicken breast to your protein sources. Cut out most of your red meat intake. Continue to eat minimal dairy, lots of tofu and sprouted wheat bread during the day.

    • 5

Add green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale to at least one meal per day. Drink eight glasses of water per day and continue these eating habits in order to keep the weight off that you lost while on the Atkins diet.
