24 Hour Liquid Diet

Liquid diets can cleanse the body of toxins that gather in your system over time. Toxins come from the air, food and even household cleaners. Some positive effects of a liquid diet may be weight loss, lower blood pressure and clearer skin. Even a 24-hour fast can produce some of these results. Though some choose to go on a detox liquid diet for weeks or even months, prolonged fasting should only be attempted under a doctor's supervision.
  1. Drink water or fresh juices

    • Water is the ideal choice for a 24-hour liquid diet: not only is it free, but water helps regenerate cells, aids digestion, and has no calories. According to UCLA edocrinologist Naomi Neufeld, making a habit of drinking only water for one day every other month may lower the risk of diabetes, strokes and other health issues. Additional benefits include weight loss and lower blood pressure.

Otherwise, opt for juiced fruits, leafy greens and vegetables. Ideally, select whole fruits to juice instead of using fruit juice, which often contains added sugar. A 24-hour juice fast will provide a limited number of calories for energy, and will also give you vitamins and minerals. Thus, your body remains nourished during the day while also aiding digestion. "The Juice Lady's Guide to Juicing for Health" explains that fruit juice is rich in antioxidants, which protect your body from potentially harmful free radicals.

Liquids to avoid during this diet are oils; diet beverages containing aspartame or other artificial sweeteners, colors and preservatives; and drinks with unpronounceable ingredients and unknown chemicals. It is essential to avoid alcohol as well.

    Limit exercise

    • Because you are ingesting so few calories, you will have little energy for intense physical activity. A peaceful walk is fine, but running on the treadmill at the gym can wait for another day. Rather than exercising your body, focus instead on exercising your brain. Liquid diets can help you achieve a clear state of mind; use this clarity to reflect on "big picture" concepts, such as goal-setting and resolutions.

Exercise the next day at the cessation of the fast, after a breakfast of whole grain cereal, smoothies, or a fruit platter.

    Remove distractions

    • Though you may wish to take your mind off of your growing hunger by turning on the TV or watching a movie, instead use this time to do some creative writing or other self-fulfilling activity.

Plan your liquid diet a day ahead, charting activities that are low-stress and encourage personal growth. Select books related to your passion, and dedicate the day to enriching your identity.

Avoid going out to eat with family and friends, as the appetite stimulation of a restaurant and presence of food may leave you feeling deprived and irritable. Instead, make enough of a juice concoction to share with your roommates or loved ones, or simply make time for a calm conversation over a glass of water.
