Bernstein Diet
Dr. Stanley Bernstein, MD has been a physician for more than 35 years and has developed a practice of medically supervised weight loss programs that are pill- and supplement-free. The Bernstein Diet, aimed at breaking down fat fast while saving muscle tissue, is administered in 65 clinics in North America, as of 2009.-
Methods
-
Dr. Bernstein's clinics maintain the weight loss regimen of overweight patients over the course of a year, with patients visiting his clinic three times per week. Everydiet.com identifies the Bernstein diet as a combination of low calorie foods, behavior modification, education and vitamin/mineral supplements to create permanent weight loss in patients. In an interview with the National Review of Medicine, Dr. Bernstein explains that this 1,000-calorie diet brings its participants into ketosis--a state where the body burns its own fat. Ketosis is the condition responsible for the elimination of hunger pangs.

Warnings

The American Heart Association (AHA) warns against high-protein diets as they are often not balanced with the essential nutrients human bodies require. The AHA further says that most Americans consume more animal protein than our bodies need and overconsumption increases the risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke and several types of cancer.
