2400 Calorie Diabetic Diet Plan

Diet is one of the most crucial elements to maintaining health for those with diabetes. If you are a diabetic patient, it's important to watch your weight and the level of glucose, or sugar, in your blood. A 2400-calorie diabetic diet plan can help balance your daily intake of carbohydrates, proteins and fat, allowing you to maintain consistent blood glucose levels.
  1. Breakfast

    • Drugs.com suggests a few variations for a 2400-calorie meal plan. Keep in mind that you may substitute similar amounts of proteins, carbohydrates and fat for different meals as long as you stay within the calorie guidelines.

For breakfast, incorporate a starch such as two slices of bread or a cup of bran cereal. Also try oatmeal with a cup of skimmed or non-fat milk. You can use a maximum of 1 tsp. of margarine with your bread and substitute the milk with non-fat, sugar-free yogurt. For protein, try 2 ounces of meat, 1/2 cup of scrambled eggs, or low-fat cottage cheese. Follow up with fresh fruits.

    Morning Snack

    • For a mid-morning snack, choose one piece of bread, 3/4 ounces of pretzels, or two low-fat rice cakes. You could also have either an ounce of lean turkey meat or 1/4 cup of non-fat ricotta cheese.

    Lunch

    • Lunch can consist of a source of protein such as 3 ounces of lean roast beef or 3/4 cup of tuna. Place this between two slices of whole wheat bread. Add a couple of lettuce leaves, two tomato slices and a maximum of 1 tsp. of mayonnaise or salad dressing. Supplement with 1/2 cup of vegetable soup or a cup of carrot sticks, one fruit (peach or apple are good choices) and about 12 ounces of any diet soft drink.

    Afternoon Snack

    • Your afternoon snack could comprise 1 cup of skimmed milk or low-fat yogurt without sugar and a slice of bread or a couple of crackers.

    Dinner

    • Your last full meal of the day should include a source of protein such as 3 ounces of salmon or chicken breast (grilled), a baked potato or 1 cup of cooked pasta, and a small 1-ounce dinner roll as your source of starch. Add a cup each of steamed vegetables and tossed salad with no more than 1 tsp. of margarine or salad dressing. Finish your meal with a cup of strawberries or four apricots and a cup either of skimmed milk or non-fat, sugarless yogurt.

    After Dinner Snack

    • If you are peckish just before bedtime, have no more than 2 cups of popcorn without butter or a couple of crackers, an ounce of reduced-fat ham or cheese and a cup of skimmed milk or yogurt.

    Average Plan

    • On average, any 2400-calorie meal plan for blood sugar patients should contain about 10 sources of starch, two sources of dairy such as milk or yogurt, no less than four vegetables, two servings of meat or protein, three fruits and no more than five servings of fats in a day.
