Food List for Diabetics According to Blood Type

The Blood Type Diet is used to help the metabolism work at its best. This is done by eating food that is specifically recommended for an individual blood type. This diet is generally well tolerated by most people. Even so, the diabetic should make sure to include specific dietary needs into his diet when following the Blood Type Diet.
  1. Diabetes

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, "45 to 65 percent of daily calories should come from carbohydrates, 15 to 20 percent of daily calories should come from protein, and 20 to 35 percent of daily calories should come from fat."

These guidelines should still be followed when eating for the blood type.

    Diabetic Blood Type A

    • The blood type A diabetic will benefit most from eating meat protein that comes from fish. Cod, monkfish, rainbow trout, tilapia, and whitefish are all good protein choices.

Vegetable proteins should include legumes and nuts. Specifically, black eyed peas, pinto beans, pumpkin seeds and red peanuts.

Blood type A vegetables that can be well tolerated by diabetics include artichokes, alfalfa sprouts, broccoli, carrots, okra, onions and spinach.

Berry fruits are the best fruit choices, including blackberries, cherries and cranberries. Remember to eat these fruits in moderation.

The blood type A diabetic reaps the most benefits from soy-based dairy products like soy milk and cheese.

    Diabetic Blood Type B

    • Protein choices for the blood type B diabetic include lamb, venison, veal, caviar and some fish. Fish include caviar, mahi mahi, scallops and tilapia. Macadamia nuts are also recommended as a viable source of protein.

The best vegetable choices for the diabetic with the blood type of B are vegetables like avocados, broccoli, beats, cabbage, cauliflower and eggplant.

Some fruits can be eaten in moderation. Fruits like bananas, cranberries, figs, grapes, and papaya are good selections for the blood type B, however, these fruits should be eaten only if allowed by a physician.

The best dairy choices for this diabetic are eggs, feta cheese and cottage cheese.

    Diabetic Blood Type AB

    • The really interesting thing about a person who has the blood type AB is that this person can follow a diet that combines food choices from both A and B. However, the AB blood type person should eat less meat protein than the diabetic with the blood type B, and protein choices should come from plant or fish choices before red meats.

    Diabetic Blood Type O

    • The major sources of protein for the diabetic with the blood type O should come from red meats, and then from fish. Recommended foods include beef, buffalo, lamb, veal, venison, cod, halibut, rainbow trout and red snapper.

The blood type O diabetic may also eat vegetable sources of protein like pinto beans and black eyed peas.

Other vitamin rich vegetables that are allowed are artichokes, avocados, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, spinach and cabbage.

Fruits that are recommended for the blood type O diabetic are figs, plums and prunes. However, they should only be eaten in moderation.
