How to Keep Your Sugar Level Even All Day

Blood sugar is another term for glucose, a type of sugar found in your blood that comes from consuming carbohydrates, your body's primary energy source. Everyone's blood sugar level increases just after eating, and this results in insulin released by your pancreas to keep your glucose from skyrocketing. People with diabetes need to keep their blood sugar between 90 and 130 prior to eating, and under 180 no more than two hours after consuming food. Monitoring your eating habits helps to maintain a consistent level throughout the day.

Instructions

    • 1

Avoid eating sweets. This is a no-brainer for most diabetics, but some find it hard not to indulge. If you do eat sweets, eliminate eating other carbohydrates at the same time to keep your blood glucose level correct.

    • 2

Make good choices about the fatty foods you consume. Trans fats and saturated fats are the worst for you, and in the long-term may contribute to heart disease -- a concern for all diabetics. Unsaturated fats, such as those found in many vegetables, seafood, canola oil and olive oil, promote a healthy heart and can help reduce inflammation.

    • 3

Eat breakfast every morning and small meals throughout the day. Many people consume more food when they eat only once per day, and the onslaught of calories, carbohydrates and fats makes your blood sugar unstable.

    • 4

Watch the types of carbohydrates you eat and how many you consume. Complex carbohydrates, such as nuts, rice, potatoes and grains digest slowly, helping you to feel fuller longer, which in turn helps you maintain your blood sugar level throughout the day.
