How to Pack a Diabetic Lunch

Eating candy or other foods high in sugar and carbohydrates can send a person suffering from diabetes into diabetic shock. Healthy, wholesome foods are good choices to make sandwiches or sides that are delicious and nutritious. Instructions

    • 1

Make sandwiches out of a high-fiber whole wheat bread. According to the Cleveland Clinic, fiber delays sugar absorption, which helps control blood-glucose levels. For the meat on sandwiches, use turkey or any low-fat meat. Eating meats lower in fat helps to prevent heart disease, for which diabetics have an increased risk. If the person is an athlete, however, you can use meats with a little more fat to provide extra energy.

    • 2

Use celery sticks or carrots for a side dish. Fill the celery sticks with peanut butter or include cheese. Use a dip, such as hummus, for the carrots. Sliced apples are also a healthy choice. Fruits and vegetables are good low-fat choices.

    • 3

Pack a yogurt or peanut butter dip with fruit, such as apple slices or oranges, for dessert.

    • 4

Pack a water bottle or fruit drink. According to "Diabetes Drinks," fruit juice can be diluted with tonic water to cut down the amount of sugar intake. These drink choices are healthy and avoid spiking glucose levels.

    • 5

Avoid salty foods or sauces in your packed-lunch meals. Salty foods -- such as canned meats, canned vegetables, ketchup, mustard, processed lunch meats, canned olives and salty snacks -- contain high levels of sodium, which can put someone with diabetes at risk for high blood pressure.
