What Is Diethylpropion 75 mg?

Diethylpropion, also sold under the brand names Tenuate Dospan or Tenuate, is a prescription drug. It stimulates your brain and nerves to increase heart rate and blood pressure and decrease your appetite. It comes in two dosages: a 25 mg tablet and a 75 mg tablet. Diethlpropion 75 mg is intended for time-controlled release.

    • Diethylpropion is widely used as an appetite suppressant, although Medline Plus mentions that it can be prescribed for other uses as well. However, for the most part, it is used as a short-term dietary supplement taken over the course of a few weeks to aid in weight loss.

    Dosage

    • According to Medline Plus, diethylpropion is usually taken in its 75 mg tablet form once a day at mid-morning. However, you should always consult your doctor about your dosage and follow her instructions. The pills are meant to be swallowed whole and should not be crushed or chewed. Additionally, use of diethylpropion should not stop eating altogether. The drug is meant to be taken along with a balanced, healthful diet as outlined by your doctor.

    Precautions

    • Diethylpropion can be dangerous to people with certain preexisting conditions. If you have heart disease, arteriosclerosis, glaucoma, or a history of drug and alcohol abuse, you should not take diethylpropion. Additionally, if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) within the past 14 days, you cannot take diethylpropion. Those with anxiety disorders, seizure disorders, thyroid disorders or diabetes may not be able to take diethylpropion and should consult their doctors about these conditions before taking the medication.

    Side Effects

    • As with any medication, diethylpropion can cause unwanted side effects. Medline Plus mentions: dry mouth, unpleasant taste, restlessness, anxiety, dizziness, depression, tremors, upset stomach, vomiting and increased urination. If these side effects persist or worsen, you should contact your doctor. More severe side effects include: fast or irregular heartbeat, heart palpitations, increased blood pressure, allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, rash, swelling, throat closing), fever, chills, sore throat and painful urination. If you experience these side effects, contact your doctor immediately.

    Warnings

    • Diethylpropion is a habit-forming drug that can cause its users to become physically and psychologically dependent. If you stop taking this drug abruptly, you may suffer from withdrawal symptoms. It is best to work out a schedule with your doctor to gradually reduce the dosage.
