What Should Blood Type O People Eat?

Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo, a naturopathic physician, is the author of "Eat Right For Your Type." Building on his father's work, D'Adamo believes blood type unlocks the mysteries of disease, longevity, fitness and emotional strength. Type O is the original type, dating back to hunter-gatherers.
  1. Type O

    • Because of their heritage, people with type O blood are strong, natural leaders who do best on a high-protein diet. They thrive on intense physical exercise and may become depressed and overweight without it. They are prone to inflammatory conditions such as hypothyroidism, arthritis, asthma and ulcers.

    What To Eat

    • Type Os should eat lean beef, chicken, turkey, recommended fish, nuts, seeds and restrict consumption of dairy products, according to Dr. D'Adamo. Kelp, seafood and iodized salt increase thyroid production and encourage weight loss. Liver, kale, broccoli and spinach help metabolic efficiency. Highly beneficial fruits include figs and plums.

    What Not To Eat

    • Type Os should avoid wheat products due to lectins which react negatively with their blood and digestive tracts. Cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower and mustard greens inhibit thyroid function while eggplant and potatoes can cause arthritis. Corn, kidney beans and lentils can cause weight gain.

    Research

    • Although D'Adamo mentions research on animals and case studies of humans who claim to have been helped by the blood type diet, there are no clinical trials to prove the efficacy of the diet. The Mayo Clinic believes there is no scientific basis for it.
