AB Diets

The AB blood type is a combined blood type derived from from types A and B. This means that ABs share some similarities with these two blood types. AB is also the newest blood type and is found in less than 5 percent of the population. Some authorities believe that, because blood type can be a marker of differences in a person's susceptibility to certain diseases and differences in digestion, it should also be used to determine a person's ideal diet.
  1. Good Foods for AB Blood Types

    • AB blood types should eat foods high in protein, like fish and legumes. Fermented soy products are also high in protein and good for this blood type. Dairy products, particularly cultured dairy products like yogurt and kefir, are healthful for AB types and fresh fruits and vegetables should be a part of a balanced AB diet. Salmon, red snapper, tuna and sardines are good fish for AB blood types.

    Foods to Avoid

    • Type ABs share A blood type's low stomach acid, so should be careful with certain red meats. For ABs, meats tend to be stored as fat, so eating smaller meat portions is helpful. ABs should also avoid lima beans and kidney beans as well as buckwheat, corn and sesame seeds. Cured and smoked meats should be avoided. Also, in times of stress, ABs should not indulge in caffeine or alcohol.

    Meal Size and Frequency

    • Not only do AB blood types need to control their meat portions, but this blood type should also eat smaller meals more frequently, rather than larger and less-frequent meals. Because of the low stomach acid AB types tend to exhibit, smaller meals are easier to digest. ABs should also avoid eating starches and protein altogether. This allows for better digestion of both in a low stomach acid environment.

    Weight Loss

    • For weight loss, ABs should focus their diets on foods like tofu and seafood for protein, mixed with green vegetables and healthy dairy products. Exercise is also important for AB blood types who can have difficulty managing stress. Combining aerobic exercises like biking, hiking or jogging with meditative exercises like yoga and tai chi can help ABs to manage stress and remain healthy.
