How to Decrease the Chances of Overdosing on Alcohol

Whether you drink alcohol or not, it is important to come to terms with the fact that it is a poison. A little bit of it here and there probably won't kill you, but it is a dangerous chemical and drinking too much can give you alcohol poisoning, which will land you in the hospital at best and the morgue at worst. It's not particularly difficult to avoid overdosing on alcohol, but you do need to be self-aware and aware of what is going on around you in order to minimize your chances of ruining your night and your health.

Instructions

    • 1

Eat before you drink. If you don't have time to have dinner before you go out, order a bowl of fries or some wings at the bar. This will make your body metabolize alcohol more efficiently and make you able to handle more.

    • 2

Be aware of the alcohol content in your drinks. Some drinks are much stronger than others, so while you may think you drank two you actually had six or more standard drinks. If you keep an eye on this you can pace yourself more effectively.

    • 3

Drink two or fewer drinks per hour. This will give your body time to process each one, which will keep the alcohol from shocking your system too thoroughly.

    • 4

Have a drink of water in between your drinks. This will help keep you hydrated but also help you follow Step 3 more effectively.

    • 5

Avoid drinking when you are upset, depressed or otherwise trying to self-medicate. If you treat alcohol like this you will try to get drunk, which is a major cause of overdosing on alcohol.
