DIY Alkaline Water
The benefits of alkaline water have been highly disputed in the U.S., and most medical case studies praising the benefits come from outside the country. However, the U.S. has gained some alkaline water advocates. As Mayo Clinic Nutritionist Katherine Zeratsky points out in her online Q&A, although research hasn't verified most alkaline water claims, recent studies suggest that it may slow bone loss. All debates aside, the best and least controversial benefit of alkaline water is how easily you can make it in the comfort of your own home, using one common household ingredient.Things You'll Need
- 2-quart glass jar
- Screw on lid
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- PH testing strips
Instructions
-
-
1
Fill a 2-quart (1/2 gallon) glass jar with either tap or bottled water until almost full. Do not overfill the jar as you will need to shake the contents later.
-
2
Add 1/2 teaspoon baking soda and stir lightly.
-
3
Screw lid on firmly and shake until the contents are thoroughly mixed.
-
4
Test the pH of the water by dipping a test strip into the water and comparing it to the key on the pH strip container. If the pH of the water is between 8.5 and 9.0, then you are done.
-
5
If it is not, add baking soda in 1/4-teaspoon increments as needed to achieve the desired 8.5 to 9.0 pH.
