How to Stop Being Addicted to Sugar

Sugar is an addictive substance and if you have ever eaten more than your share of cookies or candy you likely agree. Much of the food people consume is full of sugar. This is particularly true in America were people consume an average of 20 to 30 teaspoons of sugar a day. Over consumption of sugar can lead to many health problems including obesity, diabetes and heart disease as well as anxiety and depression. Accordingly, if you currently struggle with over consumption of sugar it is important to take steps to overcome the addiction in order to preserve your health.

      Eliminate processed and prepackaged foods from your diet. Remove these products from your home and office if possible. Replace the eliminated foods with natural foods including fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

      Read the ingredient labels before buying or consuming foods. Avoid foods that contain white or brown sugar, corn syrup or maple syrup.

      Avoid going prolonged periods without eating. Eat small meals throughout the day to avoid hunger and include whole grain carbohydrates, lean protein and healthy fats, such as olive oil into every meal.

      Incorporate healthy snacks such as fruit, vegetables and nuts into your diet for those occasions when you cannot or do not want to eat a full meal. Eat naturally sweet foods such as fresh fruit when you find yourself craving sugar.

      Take your time when eating so that you will feel satisfied once finished. Chew slowly and savor each bite. Avoid eating while doing other tasks such as watching television or working.

      Find ways to manage if you find yourself craving sugar when stressed, anxious or bored. Perform relaxing activities such as meditating, listening to soothing music or taking a hot bath. Call up a friend or family member or take a walk to combat boredom related sugar cravings.

      Learn to differentiate sugar cravings from hunger. Understand that cravings typically arise suddenly whereas hunger gradually arises. Eat a healthy meal or snack if you are experiencing hunger. However, if you are having a craving figure out the cause (such as boredom or stress) and take steps to remedy it without resorting to food.
