How to Filter High Levels of Fluoride
Fluoride is a substance that was added to water by the United States government in the 1940s. The reasoning behind adding fluoride to tap water was to help prevent tooth decay. Although some studies have demonstrated that fluoride does help prevent tooth decay, there are other negative side effects caused by ingestion of fluoride, such as cancer and birth defects. Removing high levels of fluoride from tap water is simple and inexpensive and performed by using a water filter.Things You'll Need

1
Purchase a fluoride water filter. These filters can be found at many grocery stores. There are a few different options for water filters. Filters can be purchased for installation on your tap itself so the water that comes from your tap is filtered, or they can be purchased as containers to place in the refrigerator or pantry. One benefit to purchasing a water filter container that can be stored in a refrigerator is that your drinking water will be both filtered and cold.

2
Soak the water filter. Whether the filter is a tap filter or a container, the actual filters you replace inside the tap or pitcher system must be soaked prior to use. Fill a large cup or container with cold water and place the filter in the water. Allow to soak for approximately 15 minutes to remove any dirt or loose carbon or alumina found in the filter.

Install the water filter. If the filter is for your sink tap, unscrew the tip of the tap and screw on the water filter. If the filter is a pitcher, simply insert the soaked filter, place the lid on the pitcher and fill the pitcher up with water. Depending on the type of refrigerator you have, you may also have the option to install a water filter on your refrigerator water dispenser. To replace a refrigerator filter, follow instructions from the refrigerator manual, as there are different installation instructions based on the model and brand of refrigerator.
