How to Change Your Body's pH Balance

The pH, or potential hydrogen, is a scale of alkalinity and acidity. The scale runs from 0 to 14, with 0 being absolutely acidic and 14 being absolutely alkaline. The natural alkalinity of blood is around 7.4, which is slightly alkaline. The body's natural tendency is to maintain slight alkalinity and avoid acidity, which will lead to health problems ranging from blurred vision to osteoporosis. There are several ways to keep the body slightly alkaline, a condition that will keep you in better health.

Instructions

    • 1

Decrease your intake of acidic foods. These foods include oatmeal, buttermilk, cereals, eggs, turkey, chestnuts, honey, lamb and cottage cheese. The foods do not need to be completely eliminated from your diet -- only reduced enough to ensure that they do not make your blood overly acidic.

    • 2

Increase the amount of alkaline foods in your diet. These foods include onions, iceberg lettuce, broccoli, squash, peaches, tomatoes, rhubarb, carrots, beets and avocado.

    • 3

Drink at least 64 ounces of water each day. This amount of hydration will flush all of the acidic toxins from your blood, making you feel better and balancing your pH levels.

    • 4

Eat three full meals each day -- breakfast, lunch and dinner -- and two to three snacks per day at times in-between the meals. This will ensure that the acidic nature of your stomach and blood remains in balance.

    • 5

Switch to almond milk or soy milk. Cow's milk will produce excess mucous and raise the acidic nature of the blood.

    • 6

Reduce the stresses in your life. Avoid stressful situations and take deep breaths throughout the day. Or take up yoga. Stress causes the digestive and circulatory systems to become sluggish, which in turn permits acidic toxins to build in the blood.
