What happens to food in a pharynx?

The pharynx is a muscular tube that connects the nasal and oral cavities to the larynx and esophagus. It is not directly involved in the digestion of food. Food passes through the pharynx on its way to the esophagus, which is the tube that carries food to the stomach.
