How to Make One Serving of Oatmeal in a Microwave
Things You'll Need
- Microwaveable bowl
- "Quick," or "instant" oatmeal, prepackaged or 1/2 cup bulk
- 1/2 to 1 cup of water or milk
- Pinch of salt, if desired
- OPTIONAL:
- Fresh or dried fruits (berries, dates, raisins)
- Nuts (walnuts, pecans)
- Honey or other sweeteners (maple syrup, agave, sugar)
- Spices (cinnamon, nutmeg)

Start your day with healthy grains. Empty a packet of dry oatmeal, or about a 1/2 cup of bulk oats, in a microwavable bowl. Add a pinch of salt for taste, if desired.

Stir in 1/2 to 1 cup water or milk to moisten. Milk makes for a richer, creamier oatmeal and increases calcium, but it adds extra calories. More liquid thins the meal; less makes for a thicker porridge.

Dried fruits are an excellent topping. Put the bowl in a microwave oven -- do not cover -- and cook 1 1/2 to 2 minutes on high. When the time is up, remove the bowl from the microwave; take care, the bowl may be hot. Stir. Add fruits, nuts or other toppings. You may also pour extra milk over the porridge for a wetter cereal.
