How to Keep Greens From Wilting

Healthy, nutrient-rich greens such as parsley, dill and lettuce can be smart and tasty additions to your dishes. Packed with vitamins and minerals, dark leafy greens are some of nature's best "super foods". Yet because of their delicate nature, greens tend to lose water quickly and wilt within days of being cut from the root. Prepping and storing your greens properly will ensure your greens stay fresh as long as possible.

Instructions

Wash your greens thoroughly with cool water. Place them in a shallow bath of water in the bowl of your salad spinner. Wash the leaves and stems of your greens, making sure that all dirt has come off. Avoid putting your greens directly under a running tap as this will bruise and damage them.

    • 2

Drain the water from the bowl and place your greens in the spinner. Spin your greens as dry as possible.

    • 3

Lay your greens out on a paper towel and leave to them to dry. Be sure to not overdry the greens as this will cause them to go limp faster.

    • 4

Cut off any stems from greens such as parsley, dill and cilantro. You may discard these or freeze them for later use in soups or stews.

    • 5

Line the bottom of a plastic container with paper towel. Place your greens in the container, making sure to not overcrowd them. Place another piece of paper towel on top of your greens, seal the container, and place it in the fridge. The paper towel should prevent moisture from leaving your greens and keep them fresh longer.
