Low-Carb Diet FAQ

A low-carb diet prohibits simple carbohydrates, so the dieter might lose weight. Although this diet has become popular in the last decade, there are many questions about it, including whether the diet works and which foods have carbs.
  1. What are Carbs?

    • Carbohydrates are a source of energy found in foods such as grains, fruits, vegetables and dairy. The other two sources of energy in foods are proteins and fats. These two are harder to break down for the body.

    Which Carbs are Prohibited?

    • Most low-carb diets cut out simple carbohydrates, found in white bread, pasta, white rice, and other starchy foods. Fruits and vegetables may be high in carbohydrates, but these are complex carbohydrates, difficult for the body to break down. Most diets allow these.

    Do Low Carb Diets Work?

    • According to the "New York Times," low-carb diets can help people lose weight. But they do so at about the same rate as other diets, like low-fat diets or the South Beach diet. The trick may be that all of these diets reduce the number of foods available to people, thus curtailing consumption.
